Our centralized engineering structure coordinates the capabilities of each location and the management of each Center of Excellence. Since we manufacture a growing number of flexible solutions, certain locations are better suited to develop the engineering capability of a particular type of solution. These Centers of Excellence serve as the repository of knowledge and innovation for the particular solution and maintain their readiness with assistance from the Corporate Engineering establishment.

Design Capability

To ensure your application specifications are met, United Flexible has a powerful selection of design software—some developed in-house, with others purchased from nationally recognized providers. Our hose simulation software takes in application inputs, compares them with a set of S/N curves developed though decades of empirical testing, and outputs a set of stress numbers that serve to generate a longevity analysis. The equations were derived from nationally recognized industry standards, which assures a robust and accurate solution dataset.

Our bellows design software, like the hose design above, utilizes decades of empirical testing to generate a cycle life solution output. This software was developed internally utilizing the Expansion Joints Manufacturer Association nationally recognized equations.

United Flexible also has ANSYS software that enables us to develop a Finite Element Analysis model of a braided hose. This enables our company to fully analyze the behavior of a hose section under an unparalleled array of applications including pressure, temperature and mechanical loading in all degrees of freedom. A vast material selection allows our company to theoretically apply any commercially available material into the design of the hose section. This saves lots of labor time and money in prototyping by developing a model of what the customer requires, analyzing its performance, and generating a robust design without having to make a single prototype.

United Flexible also has multiple seats of Solid Works. We utilize this software to generate solid models of not only product, but also tooling and fixtures. The virtues of solid modeling are widely known; as we are able to develop complex tooling and fixtures for testing, reviewing their capability and robustness prior to cutting a single piece of material.

PPAP (Production Part Approval Process) is defined as a standardized process in the automotive and aerospace industries that helps manufacturers and suppliers communicate and approve production designs and processes before, during, and after manufacture. We perform this process with a multitude of customers, using their formatting as well as ours to generate a comprehensive inspection process in the first stages of full production.

FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) is defined as is a step-by-step approach for identifying all possible failures in a design, a manufacturing or assembly process, or a product or service. “Failure modes” means the ways, or modes, in which something might fail. Failures are any errors or defects, especially ones that affect the customer, and can be potential or actual. “Effects analysis” refers to studying the consequences of those failures. Failures are prioritized according to how serious their consequences are, how frequently they occur and how easily they can be detected. The purpose of the FMEA is to take actions to eliminate or reduce failures, starting with the highest-priority ones. (Courtesy of ASQ). We perform this valuable service to many of our customers to make sure risks and potential failures are investigated and acted upon BEFORE the units are in full production.

FAI (First Article Inspection) is defined as a formal method of providing a measurement report for a given manufacturing process. The method consists of measuring the properties and geometry of an initial sample item against given specifications, for example a drawing. Items to be checked in a FAIR are wide and varied and may include distances between edges, positions of holes, diameters and shapes of holes, weight, density, stiffness, color, reflectance or surface finish (courtesy of WikiPedia). We provide FAI reports to many of our customers when a new part is developed or when a major change in Fort, Fit or Function is identified in the process. We perform FAI reports on our own format or on customer formats depending on the customer’s requirements.

Metallurgical Analysis

United Flexible has capabilities to perform micro-analysis of metallic objects. These vary from sections of corrugated metallic hose, to bellows sections to boundary welds, etc. We can analyze these to perform root cause analysis or to document metallurgical adherence to specifications.

Strength Testing

United Flexible can also perform tensile strength testing. Using sophisticated equipment, setup and interpreted by experienced technicians, we can analyze the tensile properties of metallic materials. This data is utilized to corroborate material certifications as well as for prototyping, design and analysis.
